PLASMA CLEANING
Plasma decontamination
Permedica’s Plasma Cleaning is a decontamination treatment for final surface cleaning of medical devices, typically dental implants, in order to improve their biocompatibility and osseointegration.
Function of Decontamination
Some metal components of invasive or implantable medical devices may be partly covered by contaminants from industrial processing.
For some types of medical devices, such as dental implants, it is necessary to achieve complete cleanliness of the exposed surface in contact with bone.
The function of the treatment is to decontaminate by plasma the devices from contaminants in order to improve their biocompatibility and osseointegration, increasing the wettability of the surface and improving prosthetic adsorption [1-3]. Plasma is the fourth state of matter (solid, liquid, gas, plasma). Plasma is a collection of electrically charged particles (electrons, ions, and radicals) and is obtained by supplying a given amount of energy to a gas.
Plasma acts on the surface of the product so that the charged particles of the plasma (positive ions) act as chelators on the atoms of contaminants (e.g., carbon). As a result, the concentration of contaminants on the surface of the treated device will be significantly lower than in a situation without treatment.
The low-pressure plasma decontamination process takes place within a specific plasma generation equipment.
